GPR scan for Pan Deck Concrete Slab

Client Problem

A local electrical contractor called Encompass Inspections to scan concrete pan deck at two locations where they were installing electrical and communications sleeves in the floor of a room at Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, CA. The proposed areas for core drilling are located in a concrete slab reinforced with pan deck, and the contractor wanted to know, in addition to the location and depth of utilities/reinforcements, where the flutes (low spots) were in the pandecking.

How We Responded

Encompass dispatched a technician to scan the concrete areas for all utilities and reinforcements. The technician used a handheld GPR locator to find the reinforcements, utilities, and flutes in the pandeck. The technician then used an RD 7000 receiver in power mode to verify any live electrical or communication utilities.

Results We Delivered

The technician marked the utilities and reinforcements with blue crayon, and marked the pandeck with red crayon, to allow the contractor to easily distinguish between the two sets of marks. The technician found a standard rebar pattern in both areas, but in one area also found some potential utilities shallower and offset from the rebar pattern. The RD sweep confirmed that these utilities were live and should not be disturbed.

Thanks to Encompass Inspections, the contractor was able to perform his work safely, without damaging any existing utilities or the integrity of the concrete structure.
